History of the Lodge

Right at the end of a track, where the sky and the ocean merge into one, stands a wild, mysterious wooden hunting lodge. Sand dunes, a pine forest, a freshwater spring, endless shores, untamed waves, spray and sun… Two simple yet enchanting lodges, where Mother Nature reigns supreme.

1858

A former hunting lodge, built in 1858 by Baron Boulart, the magnate who owned the then brand-new Landes forest and who was also an explorer, the hamlet of Huchet is laid out around a large colonial-style house, two wooden houses, former boathouses, and a small chapel called “Estelle de la Mar”.

1908

Discovered in 1908 by the Italian poet Gabrielle Annunzio, the Huchet stream quickly became a meeting place for people of “knowledge and good taste”. In 1934, it was listed as a natural monument.

1981

Creation on September 29, 1981 of the Huchet Current National Nature Reserve, covering an area of 656 ha.

1997

The Guérard family fell for its charms and bought it in 1997, then restored the houses bearing in mind the way they originally used to be, and added their own magnificent collection of authentic furniture and paintings, dating back to the Indo-Chinese and Indo-Portuguese periods.

1999

The Beach House opens.
The lodges stand on the “lette”. This is a geographical curiosity – a depression between two hills of sand – which marks the border between the pine forest and the sand. The sea gardens around the houses offer views of a kind you’ll only find there, on the Landes coastline.

The PLACE

Between the Dune du Pila to the north, and the Bidassoa to the south of Hendaye, a 150-kilometer stretch of golden sandy beach, wild and unspoiled, hemmed in by the great pine forest of the Landes.

All along the coast, a number of small villages, including Moliets, Léon and Vielle-Saint-Girons, invite you to enjoy a vacation in the heart of nature.

THE LODGES

Set in a landscape of sea and sand, two luxury “huts ” for those of you who’re looking for adventure. The wood is washed clean by the spray from the outside and there are red lacquer cupboards, old earthenware jars and opium tables indoors.

What is La Beach House d’Huchet?

Designed for “luxuriously wild holidays,” it comprises two charming and enchanting lodges where nature reigns supreme.

How many lodges are there and what is their layout?

La Beach House features two vast, luxury “cabins” cradled in a sea of sand dunes. Is La Beach House located within a protected nature reserve?

Yes. La Beach House d’Huchet is located at the heart of the Courant d’Huchet National Nature Reserve, established on September 29, 1981, and spanning 656 hectares. The reserve is an integral part of the coastal wetlands created by the sand dunes blocking and accumulating inland waterways. The stream (le courant) runs for about 9 km westward to the Huchet marsh, then turns south along the dune ridge before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean at a spot known as “Deléon.” The stream itself has been classified as a national natural monument since 1934.

What is the history of La Beach House d’Huchet?

The Huchet hamlet was built in 1858 by Baron Boulart—an explorer and pioneer of the newly planted Landes forest—to serve as a hunting lodge. The property centers around a colonial-style Main House, two timber Lodges (former boat sheds), and a small chapel named “Estelle de la Mar.” In 1908, the Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio discovered the Courant d’Huchet, and the area quickly became a gathering place for “people of intellect and fine taste.” Following the establishment of the National Nature Reserve in 1981, the Guérard Family acquired the property in 1997. They carefully restored the houses to their original spirit, furnishing them with their private collection of Indochinese and Indo-Portuguese antiques and paintings. La Beach House officially opened to guests in 1999.

What is the natural setting of La Beach House?

The Maisons Marines are nestled in a “lette”—a unique geographical feature defined as a depression between two sand dunes—which marks the border where the pine forest meets the beach. Between the Dune of Pilat to the north and the Bidassoa River in Hendaye to the south lies a magnificent 150-kilometer stretch of wild, golden, and beautifully preserved sand beach, bordered by the great Landes pine forest. Along this coastline, charming coastal villages like Moliets, Léon, and Vielle-Saint-Girons offer the ultimate immersion in pristine nature.
